We kicked off the new year with a beautiful and inspiring Artist of the Month reception featuring Chris Burton, a mixed media artist and art teacher whose work invites both curiosity and quiet reflection. Her exhibit "Looking Up Looking Out Looking Within" is currently on display in Scott Hall throughout the month of January.

Chris filled the space with a rich variety of abstracts, mandalas, and mixed media collages, and each piece feels layered with story and intention—art that rewards you the longer you linger with it. Included in her collection are small shrine pieces, intimate works that feel personal and sacred, and offered at an accessible price point (just $40).

During the reception, Chris generously shared a glimpse into her creative process. She gave a short demonstration of how she begins a mandala drawing from a single point at the center of the paper, then places dots symmetrically around that center and connects them intuitively. Watching the structure emerge so simply—and so meditatively—was a reminder that mandala-making is as much about presence as it is about technique.

Chris’s exhibit will remain on display throughout the month of January, offering plenty of time to return, look more closely, and discover new details each visit. To close out the month, Chris will also be teaching a Mandala Drawing Class on Saturday, January 31, from 1–3pm. Space is limited, and it’s a wonderful opportunity to learn directly from her and explore this calming, creative practice yourself. Click HERE for the registration link. $45 fee (includes all supplies).
We’re so grateful to Chris Burton for sharing her art, her process, and her creative spirit with our community this January.
