Artist of the Month
(AUGUST)
After getting his Associate in Fine Art in 1982, and his BFA in Painting/Drawing in 1984, Paul Breuer began working with Robert Malone, master printer, in the graduate print shop at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. He has shown his pieces in various group and solo shows from Saint Louis, Missouri to Ankara, Turkey, where he has pieces in a public collection at Bilkent University.

Paul fuses quilt making and printmaking together, finding joy in the unique challenges and opportunities this creative combination offers. Each quilt is composed of photopolymer gravure prints, or solar plate prints, which are a nontoxic printing process. He has been working in nontoxic processes for 10 years. The quilt is created using 8 x 10 inch solar plates. He may use 2-3 different plates and pull nearly 100 prints to create the final image on the quilt. The prints are cut to fit a geometric pattern he composes in the quilt. The pieces are taped together on the back side and quilted to the other layers of the quilt.
The patterns have always been symbolic of the patterns we create in our habits, lifestyles, and thinking. They exist in nature as well as in our daily routines. Using the quilt as a stage for these patterns may elicit feelings of comfort for the viewer despite the chaos some of the patterns portray.
Paul's art will be on display from August 1 - August 27 in scott hall of the Center for spiritual living.
His artwork will be for sale! Visit the rising thought bookstore to purchase.
